Sartell Boys have Success on the World Stage!
The USA Male Cadet Compound Archery Team comprised of Corey Muellenbach (Sartell), Adam Wruck (Rice) and Cory Manahan (New York) are ranked #1 in the world after they defeated the team from Switzerland for the Gold Medal at the Junior World Archery Tournament in Merida, Mexico last week. Muellenbach also won the individual bronze in a head to head shootoff against Wruck.
412 young men and women from 52 countries spent the last week in Mexico competing to be the best in the world! To qualify for the USA World Team, Muellenbach and Wruck placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the National Outdoor Archery Championships in Colorado Springs, CO in early August.
After the first two days of team qualifying, the USA team was ranked 2nd behind Australia. They then proceeded in the elimination round to defeat Puerto Rico, Denmark and Switzerland for the GOLD!
After the individual qualifying, Wruck was in 14th place, Muellenbach 17th. Wruck defeated 19th place Thor Sorenson from Denmark 113-107, 3rd place Brendan Wallace from Australia 112-110, 11th place Jesus Alvarez from Mexico 114-113 before losing in the semi-final round to the archer Kevin Brunni from Switzerland 108-111. Muellenbach followed a similar path defeating 16th place Alexi Kauppila from Finland 114-105, 1st place Guy Phillips of Australia 113-111, 8th place Simon Rousseau from Canada 114-112 before loosing to Goica De Larra from the Dominican Republic 112-114.
This set up a bronze medal match between two classmates at Sartell High School. With only one arrow left to go, Muellenbach and Wruck were tied! Muellenbach shot first and scored a perfect 10! Wruck came close to extending the match, but fell one short with a 9 and finished in 4th place.
This is an amazing conclusion of the 2006 Archery Schedule for Wruck and Muellenbach and shows just how close these two young archers are. Sharing the same coach, Linda Beck from Maple Lake, Wruck took 4th and Muellenbach 5th at the National Indoor Championships in Wisconsin Rapids, WI in March. In Colorado in August, Muellenbach place 2nd and Wruck 3rd at the National Outdoor Championships. They also placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Junior World Trials. Now, 3rd and 4th respectfully in the WORLD!
